Removal of cementicious and perished mortars and repointed. These works were absolutely essential, due to insufficient mortars, the stonework was extremely damp and failing in area's. The decayed iron stones were removed and replaced with a like for like iron stone, the mortars were replace with a far softer (sacrificial)  lime mortar to draw moisture away from the stone.

The chimney was  recorded and dismantled and rebuilt, with a lime mortar fluanch to help shed water from the chimney. 

Burnt Sand Mastic was installed around all timber windows to form  permeable and flexible seal between stonework and timber.

Initially works were to involve general repointing of the 90 metre East Curtain with a few isolated repairs to the ironstone fabric. Once the Ivy had been cut back it was decide that the walls were in far greater danger of collapse and decay than previously thought.  The entire top of the wall was dismantled, recorded, and re-laid back to its original position, the lower sections of wall received localised repairs and deep repointing works. The walls had a large collapsed section that had been wrecked by large Buddleia roots systems, these were carefully cut out/treated. The stonework was dismantled and rebuilt in the form of roughracking, to show its collapsed status but to ensure the wall was kept structurally sound and water tight. The wall was then soft capped using local sourced turf and soil.
